Agent-Based Systems
Agent-Based Systems are “behavior-based” computer programs
that try to simulate complex phenomena through virtual “agents.”
The behavior of these agents is determined by programmable rules
that reflect the constraints and conditions of a real-world system.
Individual agents can modify their rules to adapt to changing
circumstances, and this can often alter the global behavior of
the system. Sometimes small local changes can have big system
impacts, just as a tiny disturbance in the atmosphere over Africa
can lead to a hurricane days later in the Gulf of Mexico.
Consequently, Agent-Based Systems can provide valuable insight
into the dynamics of the real-world systems they emulate.
Because they can generate strategies that the user might have
never considered, Agent-Based Systems are also powerful
strategic tools for “what-if” scenario analysis.
